May 5, 2011 - Bridgeport- Buttermilk and Point Defiance trails

This week 14 Geezers planned to hike the two trails in Bridgeport- the Buttermilk and Point Defiance trails. Bridgeport is a State park on the South Yuba River between Grass Valley and Marysville - north of Rte. 20, and includes a covered bridge. Both trails are noted for their wild flowers- including name tags placed by a local wild flower group.

We hiked the Buttermilk trail first which is about 1.5 miles long and is an out and back hike- about 3 miles in total length. The hike was very easy with spectacular scenery following up stream along the South Yuba River. We returned to the starting point for lunch overlooking the river. Being a hot day, we were tempted to take a dip but the fast flowing water is still very cold. After lunch we hiked the Point Defiance Trail which was another 3 mile loop trail. This hike was relatively easy except for the climb paralleling Englebright Lake. There were no incidents this week, so no new material for Dick Gray's infamous poems!! Roland was treasurer for the day and it couldn't have run smoother!!! We stopped for our usual ice cream fix in Auburn and discussed our big bike ride in San Francisco next week. Arranging car pools and bike racks is quite a challenge for John, so Geezers, please respond to his e-mail as soon as you receive it. Enjoy photos from John, Loren Gray and Rod Robinson who we welcome back.
