July 7, 2011 - Kayaking/Canoeing American River

With the monumental task of sorting out the number of Geezers wishing to kayak versus the number of kayak and canoe seats available, John was finally able to keep everyone happy. Eleven Geezers and one guest were able to enjoy a great day on the south fork of the American River - east and west of Salmon Falls Road bridge.

There was a slight chance that by offering to buy ice cream after the event, a Geezer with a canoe might be able to make a trade with a Geezer with a kayak, but no trades were made! Late comers were invited to come along and welcome to swim along with the Geezer Armada.

Knowing there would be little shade, we had an early start to allow us to complete the event before the 100 degree heat set in. As we paddled up stream toward the rapids, the strong unseen river current surprised a few of us novices but we all made it - eventually, and were able to enjoy lunch together as a group. There was a general feeling that it would be much easier on the way back but we encountered a good head wind so it was like battling the current all over again. As you can imagine, this trip was not for the faint hearted and it proved to be quite a work out.
